RYA Yachtmaster (Coastal/Offshore) Theory Course (5 days)

Course Overview

On the RYA Yachtmaster Shore-based Theory course, you will gain an advanced understanding of traditional methods of navigation in offshore tidal waters. This course is strongly recommended for anyone considering the Yachtmaster Offshore practical course. One of the most common causes of Yachtmaster practical exam failure is a poor understanding of the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea (IRPCS) and the traditional methods of navigation. This course is designed to make sure that you are adequately prepared and ready to apply these principles if you progress on to take the practical exam.

Entry Requirements

An understanding of chart work and navigation equivalent to Day/Coastal Skipper level.  Candidates should ensure they meet all the course entry requirements as specified by the RYA on the RYA website: www.rya.org.uk

Course Content

The RYA Yachtmaster Theory course covers:
– Tides and tidal streams
– Buoyage
– Pilotage and passage planning
– Collision regulations and rules of the road
– Meteorology
– Navigation in restricted visibility
– Safety at sea including the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea

Examination Type

Examination is by a combination of a short-written answer question paper and practical chartwork assessment.
