MCA Approved Engine Course Part 1 (AEC 1)
Course Overview
This newly updated course with increased practical and content elements as per the recommendations of the MCA, provides the practical basic hands on training and theoretical knowledge of diesel engines to enable you to work on board as an engineer within the yacht, workboat, and fishing industries. It is one of the courses required for an Under 16.5m skippers’ ticket in the Fishing industry.
Entry Requirements
Minimum age 18 years old.
Candidates should have some experience with diesel engines and a basic familiarity of their operation is useful.

- Two- and four-stroke operation cycles and construction details
- Fuel system.
- The role of air in the combustion process
- Cooling systems
- Lubrication technology
- Engine electrical systems

- Hull fittings
- Safe working practices and pollution legislation
- LPG cylinder installations and CO risks
- Fixed Firefighting installations
- Future technologies
Examination Type
There is a short multiple-choice exam at the end of the course. An MCA approved certificate in Approved Engine Course Part 1 will be issued upon successful completion of the course.
