Course Overview

The course provides necessary knowledge, understanding and proficiency to personnel intending to work on ships who will not have any designated security duties.

This half day course is based on Regulation VI/6, paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/6, paragraphs 4 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended and is delivered alongside the basic safety training for seafarers.

54 North Maritime’s MCA approved STCW course includes:

• ½ day of training from an experienced Instructor
• All training aids, equipment, and hand-outs

Entry Requirements

All seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on ships or any other vessel to which the ISPS code applies who require a Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) certificate, will need to attend this four-hour stand-alone course. 

No previous security experience is required.

• Maritime Security Threats
• ISPS Duties & Responsibilities
• Maritime Security Levels
• The Ship Security Assessment
• Security Verification & Certification
• Interaction with Vessels, Authorities & Ports
• Training, Drills & Exercises
• Suspicious Persons & Behaviour & Circumvention of Security
• Weapons & Explosives

Examination Type

There is a short multiple-choice exam at the end of the course.  An STCW approved certificate (MCA) in Proficiency in Security Awareness will be issued upon successful completion of the course.
