Course Overview

Our Personal Survival Techniques (PST) course, accredited by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), provides knowledge of essential prevention and survival techniques. It includes both theoretical and practical sessions, investigating causes of distress; knowledge and use of equipment; launch and recovery of life rafts; preparation for survival; personal survival skills; and use of search and rescue organisations.

This course also provides real knowledge and expertise from experienced maritime trainers, with very broad operational experience.

STCW PST is one of the four compulsory modules required for employment on all commercial vessels.

This course allows students to access the skills and delivery that we have acquired from decades of operational experience in operational maritime tasks, and training delivery. Our course exceeds industry requirements and has opportunities for candidates to talk with experienced maritime personnel.  All training aids, equipment and hand-outs will be provided.

Introduction to safety and survival;

• Emergency situations
• Evacuation
• Survival craft and rescue boats
• Personal life-saving appliances
• Survival at sea
• Emergency radio equipment
• Helicopter assistance
• Donning a life jacket
• Use of an immersion suit;
• Jump safely from height into water
• Right an inverted life raft whilst wearing a life jacket
• Swim wearing a life jacket
• Keep afloat without a life jacket
• Board a survival craft
• Operate survival craft equipment
• Operate location devices
• Initial actions when boarding a survival craft to increase chance of survival

Examination Type

There is a short multiple-choice exam at the end of the course.  All trainees need to complete the exercises in the pool to gain a certificate.  If you have any restricted abilities, please call us to discuss.  Please bring a t-shirt and a towel for the pool session. An STCW approved certificate (MCA) in Personal Survival Techniques will be issued upon successful completion of the course.
